Taught course

MA Jewish Studies at Revel School, Yeshiva University

Institution
London School of Jewish Studies
Qualifications
MA

Entry requirements

You can take the MA full time (at least 9credits/3 courses per semester) or part time (entirely at your own pace, taking just one or two courses per semester). The only limit on that is that students are required to complete their degree within five years.

Revel currently offers master’s degrees in the following 6 areas of concentration: Bible, Ancient Jewish History, Medieval Jewish History, Modern Jewish History, Jewish Philosophy, and Talmudic Studies. The requirements for each concentration are included below. You can, however, apply to the MA without specifying your concentration should you wish to sample some courses before making a final decision. We are also in the process of having a new general Jewish Studies MA approved, which will give students far greater flexibility in choosing courses.

Further information, including calendars and course schedules is available on our website https://www.yu.edu/revel and in the Welcome Pack that you will receive upon admission. Any queries regarding applying to the degree should be directed to Mrs Rona Steinerman steinerm@yu.edu

Course content

Graduate study in the US differs from graduate study in the UK in a number of significant ways, the most important of which are summarized here.

A master’s degree at Revel, in line with other US institutions, comprises 30 credits, which equates to 10 courses of 3 credits each. There is also a capstone comprehensive exam to be taken on completion of the 30 credits.

Revel courses meet once a week for 100 minutes (and have a further 50 minutes of asynchronous instruction as per New York State credit requirements). Live classes run in 3 timeslots:

2.50pm-4.30pm EST (7.50pm-9.30pm BST)

4.50pm-6.30pm EST (9.50pm-11.30pm BST)

6.50pm-8.30pm EST (11.50pm-1.30am BST)

LSJS students should be able to join our 2.50pm classes live, and some night owls may even wish to join the 4.50 classes too. 6.50 classes will need to be taken asynchronously by viewing the recordings. 4.50 classes will also be recorded, however, to enable LSJS students to participate asynchronously. 2.50 courses can also be recorded with the agreement of the instructor.

Fees and funding

UK students
$34,950 per course
International students
$34,950 per course

For the 2024-25 academic year the full cost of an MA at Revel is the cost of the 30 credits plus fees

The cost per credit is $1165 (or $34,950 per course). LSJS students will automatically qualify for 2/3 scholarship and thus will only be charged $1165 per 3 credit course. If further financial assistance is needed, please contact Ms. Sheniagia Washington at swarren@yu.edu

You will be invoiced per semester for the total credits taken, so you will be able to spread the cost of the MA over the course of as many semesters as you require to complete the degree.
