Course content

Our Construction Management MSc programme enjoys a great heritage, being the longest established in the UK and the second oldest in the world. The programme is continually evolving to equip graduates with the core skills needed to succeed as a construction professional and provides the widest possible range of module options, allowing students to pursue individual interests within the construction management field.

Society continues to value and shape the built environment resulting in both public and private investment in construction assets and the successful completion of construction projects. As these projects become more socially and technically complex in a changing world dominated by a concern for sustainability, there has been a growing challenge to develop existing and new skills and expertise in construction management.

The School of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering aspires to be the world’s leading integrated centre for built environment research and education. This uniquely holistic view of construction makes it best placed for developing graduates to meet the increasing demands of the sector.

Our School is one of four Royal Academy of Engineering Centres of Excellence in Sustainable Building Design, and one of the six most highly funded EPSRC-funded groups working on built environment topics. We are also a corporate affiliate member of the Association of Project Management.

In addition to state-of-the-art teaching facilities, the School houses our own design studio and computer laboratory. Our 3,000m2 open-plan laboratory includes concrete, geotechnics, strength of materials, hydraulics, structures, surveying, public health and building services engineering laboratories along with support workshops. You will benefit from access to our High Performance computing facility – one of the UK’s fastest clusters. The School hosts BISPA – Building and Industrial Services Pipework Academy. It is a collaboration with global steel manufacturer Tata Steel and its Tubes business, and CIBSE – Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers.

Our Construction Management MSc course focuses on fundamental areas of management including research, design and technology in relation to construction. Students also have the option to delve deeper into current topics such as sustainability, strategy and procurement.

Who should study this programme?

If you're a recent graduate from construction and related disciplines, our Construction Management MSc programme is designed for you; it introduces the fundamentals and challenges faced by contemporary construction management. It’s also perfect if you have a strong technical background which you want to complement further with requisite management know-how – essential if you want to develop your national and international careers in the construction sector.
