PGCE Secondary Spanish with QTS

Entry requirements

You will normally have a minimum of a 2:2 undergraduate honours degree awarded by a UK university, or an equivalent higher education qualification. Your degree needs to support the subject knowledge requirements of the National Curriculum for Modern Foreign Languages (Spanish). For exceptional candidates, particularly those with substantial relevant work experience in schools or relevant occupations, we will consider applications from those who hold a 3rd class degree.

You will also need GCSEs at grade C/4 or above in English Language and Mathematics. However, applicants are able to apply with GCSEs pending for this course and we can also offer Manchester Met GCSE Equivalency tests in English and Mathematics.

Successful candidates will demonstrate a good understanding of teaching and learning within a secondary school setting.

Course content

Our one-year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) prepares you to teach across the Spanish secondary school curriculum.

You’ll learn how to teach your main language Spanish to A/AS level but you’ll also study a second language too for example French, German or Mandarin. This gives you the opportunity to teach your second language up to Key Stage 3 or GCSE level (this depends on your linguistic ability and qualifications).

At Manchester Met, you’ll mainly study with your PGCE Spanish groups. You’ll usually have language classes in the language you’ll teach, to help you learn teaching methods.

You’ll consider how to plan lessons, reflect on your planning, learn how research can develop your teaching practice, and look at ways to develop your teacher persona.

You won’t simply learn theory though – you’ll spend at least 120 days on placements in schools.

On your placements, you’ll normally have the opportunity to teach other languages you speak. Past students have taught their heritage languages, including Farsi, Japanese and Arabic.

We also work with schools who offer Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL). This allows you to teach another subject in a foreign language, such as teaching science or maths in Spanish.
