Entry requirements

Normally a 2:1 honours degree, or international equivalent. Native-level writers of English must have French, German, Italian and/or Spanish language as a major component. Native-level writers of French, German, Italian or Spanish must have English language as a major component. We will also consider your application on an individual basis if you have: a 2:2 honours degree, a degree in a non-languages subject and/or professional translating experience.

Course content

The Professional Translating for European Languages MA gives you the skills and knowledge to become a professional translator, working between English and French, German, Italian and Spanish.
The professional translation focus of our course is a special feature. We aim to equip you with skills and strategies to enter careers:
  • as freelance or in-house translators
  • in public or private organisations
  • in or beyond the language-services sector
We combine practical translation work with learning about the profession and how to enter it. In your professional life you will only translate into your mother tongue and our teaching reflects this.

Information for international students

To study this course you need to meet the following English Language requirements: Direct Entry: IELTS 7.0 overall (with at least 6.5 in speaking and writing, and 6.0 in reading and listening). Pre-sessional English Language courses are not accepted as an alternative entry to this course.
