Course content

Join Northumbria’s SENr accredited Sport Exercise and Nutrition Masters and gain the specialist skills and competencies needed to kick start a successful career as a sport and exercise nutritionist.

What we put into our bodies fuels us, what athletes consume before exercise can be critical to their overall performance. The demand for competent, well-trained practitioners to help guide and inform individuals in the field of sport, exercise and nutrition is increasing.

Our MSc Sport Exercise and Nutrition course is accredited through the Sport and Exercise Nutrition register (SENr*) and the modules on the Master’s programme have been designed to align with the competencies required by the SENr, Graduate accreditation pathway. This accreditation process recognises that graduates from this course have attained the necessary applied knowledge competencies, as recognised by the Sport and Exercise Nutrition industry.

As a Master of Science in Sport Exercise and Nutrition student at Northumbria, you will develop the skills and knowledge needed to work in multi-disciplinary teams and high-performance environments. You will learn how to work with people from multi-cultural and diverse background providing dietary advice whilst also considering important lifestyle considerations. For example, you will be encouraged to study contemporary practices that promote sustainability such as plant-based diets and address the dietary needs of special population groups such as the young, female and ethnically diverse athletes.

During the second part of the course you will have the opportunity choose from a range of module options that provides flexibility to part-tailor your programme to meet your needs, interests and career aspirations. For instance, if diversifying your skillset is what you want, you might choose to study ‘Physiology of Sport Performance’ as a route to further study, applying physiological assessments and interventions to support the athletic development process. Or, you might have an ambition to work in high performance sport and choose ‘Working with Elite Performers’ where you will study and work in multi-disciplinary contexts akin to a high-performance environment. If you wish to pursue an entrepreneurial route post-graduation, the ‘Sponsorship and Strategic Brand Management’ module will help you understand how to develop and market yourself as a sport and exercise nutritionist (subject to Graduate registration through SENr).
