Course content
The programme aims at extending and deepening your knowledge in English linguistics. It also strengthens your grasp of research methodology, research ethics and your ability to carry out scientific reasoning.
The Master’s Programme in English Language and Linguistics provides an in-depth two-year course of study of the core areas of English linguistics: discourse analysis, phonology, pragmatics, second language acquisition, semantics, sociolinguistics, syntax, as well as academic English, with elective courses in other areas of English linguistics. You will be trained in independent and critical work on linguistic issues, and you will improve your competence in the analysis of English language data.
The programme aims to extend and develop students’ knowledge in their chosen field of study, as well as to strengthen their inter-disciplinary knowledge of scientific theory, ethics and research methodology. The training consists of obligatory courses in the main field of study and research ethics, as well as elective/optional courses from a pool of courses offered by departments from the Faculty of Humanities. Your work with the Master’s thesis will develop your ability to conduct a linguistic investigation, analyse and discuss your observed data, and produce a scientific text in academic English.
The programme, which provides detailed knowledge and skills, may serve as preparation for Third Level studies (PhD level) in English linguistics, or for a professional career in connection with language: work in schools and higher education, archives and museums, libraries, publishing companies, domestic and international administration (e.g., in the EU), journalism, communication, interpretation and translation.
Master of Arts degree in English
A key part of the degree is the dissertation written in the fourth semester on an English linguistic topic chosen by the student, after being trained in appropriate methods and reading recent research.
The programme leads to a Master of Arts degree in English. It is intended as a general basis for professional work in language-related fields, and may serve as preparation for Third Level studies (PhD level) in English linguistics.
