Our LLM in International Trade Law at Swansea University provides a rigorous, specialist education in the legal frameworks that underpin the global economy.

The programme is designed for legal professionals and graduates seeking to build high-level expertise in the complex and politically charged field of international trade, investment, and commerce.

As a student within the School of Law, you will be taught by internationally recognised academics and experts from the research-focused Institute of International Shipping and Trade Law. You will engage with critical issues ranging from WTO Dispute Settlement and Free Trade Agreements to the Law of the International Sale of Goods, Trade Finance, and the Intersection of Trade with Environmental and Social Policy.

The International Commercial Arbitration module offered as part of this degree has been recognised by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb). This means that LLM students who manage to successfully complete the International Commercial Arbitration module at Swansea will be eligible to apply to be awarded the level of Associate Member of the CIArb.

Your International Trade Law experience

Our LLM degree equips you to develop as a 21st-century legal practitioner with a specialist, in-depth command of international law.

The programme prepares you for global practice by equipping you to navigate, not only the complex web of multilateral and bilateral trade rules, but also the varied political, ethical, and developmental contexts in which they operate. This inclusive and critically-engaged framework ensures you can develop the intellectual versatility and cultural competence to contribute meaningfully and justly to the field of international trade.

The programme comprises 180 credits of study, delivered over three semesters.

In part one, the taught stage, you will study 120 credits from a range of specialist optional modules, alongside core compulsory modules, allowing for a tailored study path. You can engage in in-depth exploration of areas such as International Dispute Resolution and the Law of the International Sale of Goods.

Upon successful completion of part one, you will progress on to your final dissertation. You will undertake a substantial, independent research project of approximately 20,000 words. The dissertation is structured into two parallel projects, each with its own structured milestones and formative feedback, to support you in managing this major research undertaking by providing you with regular guidance.

Through this structure, you will be able to develop a profound and sustained command of complex legal concepts, simultaneously honing your advanced research, analytical, and professional skills that are the cornerstone of successful careers in legal practice, strategic consultancy, and impactful scholarship.
