Course content
The M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology at Syracuse University is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Graduates will have met ASHA's course and practicum requirements for the Certificate of Clinical Competence and New York State licensure. With appropriate undergraduate coursework, graduates may also qualify for certification as a Teacher of Students with Speech-Language Disabilities (TSSLD) in New York State.
Applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution; an undergraduate degree in communication sciences is not required.
The curriculum prepares students in three core areas:
- Foundations of Practice — human communication and swallowing processes across the lifespan, including biological, neurological, developmental, linguistic, and cultural dimensions.
- Identification, Prevention, and Evaluation — principles of prevention and comprehensive assessment of communication and swallowing disorders across articulation, fluency, voice, language, hearing, cognition and social communication.
- Professional Practice — ethical conduct, clinical education, interdisciplinary collaboration, advocacy, counseling, and self-reflective professional development.
Information for international students
· International students, except those from English-speaking Canadian schools, the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand, must submit TOEFL or IELTS scores from within the last two years as proof of English proficiency. This requirement is waived for non-residents who have completed four years of undergraduate or two years of graduate study in the U.S. The recommended minimum scores are 105 on the TOEFL iBT and 7.5 on the IELTS. TOEFL scores should be sent to CSDCAS using code C122. Follow CSDCAS instructions for IELTS submission.
