Course content
Our MA Governance, Politics and Policy course explores the fundamental political, governance, and policy-related issues shaping societies in the 21st century.
On this course, you will investigate different theories of how public policies are shaped, and how scholars have understood the dynamics of the policy process. Uncover the competing interests, political ideologies, power dynamics, institutional constraints, and real-world pressures that shape decisions at every level of decision-making.
You will examine how governing systems work in a context of multiple - sometimes competing - governance actors, and how political and bureaucratic authority operates from to global to the local level. Our course units will explore the ways that public debates feed into politicians’ positions, what is driving people’s voting preferences and how these are changing, and a close examination into Britain’s political parties. Alongside this, you will develop the analytical and research skills needed to navigate and make sense of today’s most pressing political challenges.
There are two Streams on the course, including a Policy Stream and an Elections Stream, allowing you to tailor your course to fit your interests. You’ll explore topics such as:
- Political Parties in Contemporary Britain;
- Multi-level Governance;
- European Politics and Policy Making;
- Understanding Political Change;
- Politics and Data Science
