Entry requirements

Academic Qualifications

Applicants must meet at least one of the following:

  • Graduate (or expect to graduate) from a Japanese university/college before enrollment
  • Obtain (or expect to obtain) a Bachelor’s degree from a ≥3-year program at a non-Japanese university
  • Graduate from a university in a system with ≥16 years of formal education
  • Graduate from a system with ≥15 years of education and receive special approval from the University of Osaka due to outstanding academic performance

Language Requirements

Applicants must demonstrate sufficient English proficiency in all skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking), and meet one of the following minimum scores:

  • TOEIC: 700 or higher
  • TOEFL iBT: 60+ (tests before Jan 21, 2026) / 3.5+ (tests on/after Jan 21, 2026)
  • IELTS: Overall 5.0+ (with at least 5.0 in each component)

Supervisor Approval

Applicants must:

  • Contact a prospective supervisor in advance
  • Obtain a “Letter of Conditional Acceptance” confirming the supervisor’s willingness to accept them if they pass the entrance exam
  • Early contact (at least several weeks before the deadline) is strongly required

  • Application form
  • Official undergraduate transcripts
  • Certificate of graduation (or expected completion of Bachelor’s degree)
  • Statement of purpose (motivation, research plans, and program fit)
  • Letter of conditional acceptance
  • Proof of English proficiency (TOEFL/IELTS/TOEIC, unless exempt)
  • At least two evaluation letters from academic referees

Other Requirements

Must pass the selection process, including:

  • Document screening
  • Written examinations (chemistry and/or biology)
  • Interview (conducted in English)

Exams are typically held in designated international venues or Japan, with some flexibility depending on arrangements

Course content

This program combines aspects of three academic disciplines - Chemistry, Biology, and Macromolecular Science - and involves research and education in fields where chemistry merges with biology, aiming to have a broad vision. This program cultivates the capabilities, such as the ability to conduct research using advanced analytical skills, to become a leader in natural science fields and also places strong emphasis on cultivating interdisciplinary knowledge and international communication skills. Here aim is to train creative and independent researchers who have the capability to work in a broad range of fields and can work in new interdisciplinary fields.

(i) Acquire advanced knowledge and skills from basic scholarship through small-group courses and conducting cutting-edge research
(ii) Implement a program that bridges the barriers between major academic disciplines
(iii) Acquire integrated knowledge in subjects outside the field of specialization through joint classes of the three major academic disciplines
(iv) Acquire the ability to think flexibly as well as to develop a rich imagination to appreciate differing perspectives and methods of traditional disciplines
(v) Cultivate the ability to define problems and explore research through an active learning system.
