Entry requirements
Academic Qualifications
Applicants must satisfy at least one of the following:
- Hold (or expect to obtain) a Bachelor’s degree from a Japanese university/college before enrollment
- Have completed 16 years of formal education outside Japan and obtained (or expect to obtain) a Bachelor’s degree
- Have obtained a Bachelor’s-equivalent degree through a program requiring ≥3 years of study at an overseas institution
- Be recognized as academically equivalent to a university graduate by the University of Osaka and be at least 22 years old before enrollment
Language Requirements
Applicants must demonstrate English proficiency with one of the following minimum scores:
- TOEFL iBT: 79+
- TOEFL CBT: 213+
- TOEFL PBT: 550+
- IELTS: 6.0+
- Or equivalent proof, such as certification that prior education was conducted in English
Supervisor Approval
Applicants must:
- Identify and contact a prospective supervisor in advance
- Obtain the professor’s permission to apply
For applicants from overseas universities:
It is strongly recommended to first apply through the Admissions Assistance Desk (AAD) before contacting the supervisor
Application Requirements
Applicants must submit:
- Application form
- Proposed study plan (~2000 words)
- Abstract of Bachelor’s thesis
- Official academic transcripts and graduation certificate
- Proof of English proficiency (or exemption documentation)
- Recommendation letter (from academic supervisor or equivalent)
- Copy of passport (or citizenship proof)
- Application fee payment (30,000 JPY)
- Photograph meeting specified criteria
Other Requirements
Must be a non-Japanese applicant who:
- Holds (or will obtain) a Student visa status permitting graduate study in Japan
Ineligible applicants include:
- Those who will not obtain a student visa
- Members of the armed forces
Some applicants (those under special academic equivalency) must undergo pre-application screening
Must pass the selection process, which may include:
- Document screening
- Interview and/or oral/written examination (depending on application type: overseas or domestic)

Course content
The Graduate School of Engineering Science, The University of Osaka, seeks to achieve a more prominent international reputation through their increased involvement in the exchange of students and researchers as well as joint research projects. Our program now offers interdisciplinary courses in which lectures, instruction, seminars and research-related supervision are given entirely in English. Eligible students can now sequentially attain both a Master's and Doctoral degree from The University of Osaka, a leading Japanese University, while having minimal to no experience in the Japanese language.
These highly qualified and globally recognized graduate students will not only participate in cutting edge research, but also gain a sophisticated understanding of advanced engineering science topics.
