Course content

Train at the cutting edge of your chosen field, providing you not only with key practical skills but also the ability to plan and manage a project, critically evaluate data and communicate your findings to a wider audience through both oral and written means.

Specialisms in the Department include cell and developmental biology, evolution and biodiversity, infection and immunity, and medical and industrial biotechnology. The Department is also home to a world-leading centre for evolutionary research, the Milner Centre for Evolution.

The integrated PhD degree programme has been developed by leading universities of the national NewRoutePhD Consortium in response to a demand for PhD students who have both breadth and depth. You'll study taught courses during the first year (gaining an MSc award at the end of year one) while gradually increasing the amount of time spent on full-time research to 100% by the end of year two. As well as submitting a PhD thesis to the same standard as usual, you'll gain both generic skills to improve your research and professional skills individually tailored to your needs.
