Entry requirements

You should have a bachelor’s honours degree or international equivalent, typically a high 2:2 or above.

To apply for this course, you should have an undergraduate degree in chemical engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, biochemical engineering, environmental engineering, environmental sciences or natural sciences (e.g. physics, chemistry or biochemistry). We will also consider other relevant engineering and science disciplines.

If your first language is not English but within the last 2 years you completed your degree in the UK you may be exempt from our English language requirements.

We may make an offer based on a lower grade if you can provide evidence of your suitability for the degree.

Course content

Study an environmental engineering master’s that gives you the technical, professional, digital and transferable skills needed in industry.

If you have a first degree in engineering or natural sciences and want to specialise in environmental and sustainable processes, our new MSc is a good choice for you.

Our course teaches you the core environmental engineering principles and supplements this with the digital expertise needed in industry. You’ll learn how to use professional environmental management analysis and modelling IT packages for compliance, data processing and visualisation. On top of this, our degree develops your skills in interdisciplinary teamwork, effective communication, networking and time and resource management.

Taking a whole-systems approach, you’ll analyse and evaluate environmental and industrial processes to protect air, water, land and life. Our course uses problem-based learning methodologies to enable you to solve environmental problems while considering economic and legislative factors. You’ll develop the techniques to analyse the technical, economic, environmental and social impact of human activities, industrial activities, resource efficiency and pollution, processes and product alternatives.

Depending on your individual project topic, you could use our laboratory facilities that range from bench scale to pilot scale.

Our course’s multidisciplinary approach helps prepare you to work as an environmental engineer in the public and private sectors. You could work in consultancy firms, environmental management and manufacturing, or sustainable product distribution. Or you could play a critical role in stakeholder policy negotiations between economists, lawyers, engineers and environmentalists.

Some of our graduates choose to further their studies on one of our PhD programmes or with other leading institutions.

Information for international students

English language requirements

  • IELTS: 6.5 overall with no less than 6.0 in all components
  • The Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic): 62 with no less than 59 in any element
  • TOEFL IBT: 90 overall with a minimum 21 in all 4 components
