Entry requirements

• Qualified as a Dental Surgeon and have a licence to practice dentistry.
• Registered with the General Dental Council or equivalent.
• In professional practice or have a hospital appointment while attending the course.
• Registered with a Defence Union - possessing indemnity insurance with cover at an appropriate level.
• Possess a current certificate of immunisation against communicable disease Hepatitis B.
• Sufficient competency in English language (IELTS: 7.0 or equivalent).

DBS: all potential students must undergo an enhanced DBS check prior to admittance to the programme.
Applicants must provide evidence of their General Dental Council Certificate and Indemnity Insurance.
Interview required.

About the course

This part-time, two-year postgraduate Endodontology course is for the busy dental practitioner who wants to combine home study with treating patients under the direct clinical supervision of experienced consultants and specialists.

The course has been designed in response to student feedback and has evolved from our successful three-year MSc.

Much of the academic delivery is online, so you can study from home, and small group sizes, usually 12 or less, means there’s an informal and supportive learning environment.

This course will develop your skills in:

• Thorough case assessment and record taking
• Treatment planning and case selection
• Working under magnification
• Contemporary techniques for cleaning and shaping canals
• Irrigation and intracanal medication
• 3-dimensional obturation
• Restoration of the endodontically-treated tooth
• Non-surgical re-treatments

What you'll do

• You’ll benefit from authentic clinical training and online and face-to-face tuition that’s responsive to the needs of a busy general dental practitioner.
• You’ll attend up to 20 study / assessment days per year in the School of Dentistry and its Dental Clinic where you’ll assess, undertake and ultimately lead in clinical treatment.
• You will enjoy a teaching faculty led by Dr Shalini Kanagasingam, a highly experienced endodontic surgeon, who has been a course leader at the University for a number of years.

LEARNING AND ASSESSMENT

You’ll start with plenary lectures and practical sessions in our state-of-the-art phantom head facility, working on a pig’s head and similar systems. You’ll then progress to treating live patients, under close supervision in our Dental Clinic, and be assessed by Direct Observations of Procedural Skills (DOPS).

You and your group will prepare and lead the academic aspect of the course with presentations, directed reading and case-based discussions.

Two modules (DX4017 and DX4027) are delivered and assessed online. Clinical modules (DX4050 and DX4059) are assessed through a blend of course work, written and practical assessments, including direct observations whilst treating patients, and seen and unseen clinical case assessments. Assessments focus on your higher level skills of diagnosis and planning, rather than simply remembering facts. Typical assessments include analysis of given clinical cases, case presentations, practical tests, written examinations and critical essays.

OPPORTUNITIES

For dentists looking to introduce endodontic treatment within their practice, this is the ideal course. During this course you will plan and treat patients under direct clinical supervision, in our UCLan Dental Clinic.

PROFESSIONAL ACCREDITATION

Postgraduate qualifications in dentistry are not regulated by the General Dental Council in the UK.

DBS CHECKS

This course will involve you working with vulnerable groups of individuals, including children. In order to ensure that the University offers places on their programmes to suitable candidates you will all be required to obtain a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service clearance (formerly termed CRB). We will be able to guide you through this process once you have been offered a conditional place of study at the University of Central Lancashire.

It is important to note that should your Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check prove to be unsatisfactory for the purpose of the course you have applied to, your offer of a place for that course may be withdrawn. If you have already enrolled on a course and your DBS check subsequently discloses a criminal conviction, you may be required to withdraw from the course even if you have already started. If you are aware that your DBS check will disclose a previous conviction, please contact the course leader for advice as not all convictions may preclude you from continuing with the course.
