Mentoring in Dental Practice

Entry requirements

• Applicants should be Qualified Dental Professionals.
• Applicants must be experienced dentists or dental care professionals who are currently registered with the General Dental Council.
• Applicants should have the ability to study at Level 7 with evidence on the application form of study at Level 6 or above and wanting to undertake the role of mentor.
• For candidates without a current teaching qualification attendance at an additional introductory access day “Supporting Learning in Dental Practice” is required.

Course content

If you’re a dental professional and you’d like to mentor others our Advanced Certificate Mentoring in Dental Practice is for you. The course will equip you to support others to fulfil the requirements of professional practice in dental care or, who’ve been the subject of a Fitness to Practise review.

This double module, of 40 credits, combines a one-day access course, for would be mentors who don’t have a teaching qualification, with a series of five day-long taught and interactive workshops spread over a 12-week period. There’s also a supportive programme of e-learning activities and resources.

• This course helps dental professionals to support colleagues in meeting high standards of care and treatment or performance, in their conduct or health standards.
• The course has been developed with colleagues from the North Western Postgraduate Dental Deanery and expert external advisers, with specialist knowledge in the field of mentorship.
• You’ll be taught in small supportive groups by experienced lecturers and dental care professionals.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

• You’ll look at best practice in mentorship, reviewing theories and evidence, as well as roles and boundaries in the mentoring relationship.
• You’ll understand at the causes of impaired performance and sources of support for mentors and mentees.
• You’ll study legal, ethical and financial aspects of the mentoring relationship as you develop.

LEARNING AND ASSESSMENT

You’ll learn through lectures, small group discussions, presentations and simulated mentoring activity using actors and be expected to engage fully. The course is taught by subject specialists from the University and selected guest speakers.

A case-based report of approximately 5,000 words, gives you the chance to critically examine the challenges of mentoring. You’ll use a specific case study and demonstrate how you’d address these challenges.
