Entry requirements

  • Applicants should hold at least 2:2 degree in related subject.
  • Applications from all candidates will be considered on their merits in the light of the nature and scope of the programme and if they have experience.
  • Recognition of Prior and Work Based Learning in accordance with University regulations may be available.
  • Applicants must be working to build on learning and to build portfolio for final assessment.
  • A detailed admissions procedure will be forwarded on application
  • IELTS: Score of at least 6.5 or equivalent.
  • International applicants will have sufficient competency in English language (IELTS Level 6.5 or equivalent)

If you are you a Postgraduate Professional (PGP) seeking a move into Senior Leadership, the MSc Medical Leadership program will equip you to lead your team in the executive arena. Discover and capitalise on your unique leadership strengths, maximise your leadership legitimacy and improve team performance in your specialist area.

The course combines diverse, commercial know-how and internationally recognised self-assessment tools to help you develop best practice.

The Medical Leadership foundation module provides a toolkit to help you establish the baseline of your leadership strengths and style, and your NHS competency level to lead from the front and move up the career ladder.

Once you have completed the foundation module, you can cherry pick your next module - focusing on your personal interests, professional and organisational needs, and the skills you require to succeed in Senior Leadership.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • The Medical Leadership foundation will enable participants to establish a baseline of their unique strengths, style, role competency and organisational priority in the context of their sphere of practice. The culture of the programme is to foster positive collaborative peer groups, and build the foundations of the academic toolkit and skill for successful postgraduate assessment attainment.
  • In each Medical Leadership module PGP's will drive innovation in leading self, leading with their team and developing the key senior leadership skill sets that are essential to the NHS leadership competency framework driving towards the exemplary level.
  • Study at your own pace, putting new skills into practice with the support of your peers and the academic team before moving on to the next stage. Benefit from multi-professional learning in small groups of six per module.

LEARNING AND ASSESSMENT

Modules are delivered using a range of methods including live online conference calls, asynchronous and live discussion, recorded lectures, and small peer group learning groups.

Two-hour video calls are scheduled every 1-3 weeks, giving you time to digest, implement and reflect on your new know-how throughout each module.

Peer-to-peer group work, peer-led feedback and positive support from your group leader will help you to develop leadership skills and proficiencies as you progress through the course.

Bite-sized pieces of work will enable you to build up a whole picture of your sphere of practice in relation to each module. You’ll be assessed on these in order to demonstrate that you’ve achieved the learning outcomes from each module.

Oral exams (viva) are your opportunity to share, appraise, synthesise and evaluate your learning from a module.

The course was developed with UK medical colleagues, and informed by successful executive and team leadership projects across many industries internationally.

The curriculum for the Medical Leadership course is aligned with the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management Standards (2016). (As per bulletted list) The curriculum is also mapped to the GMC Leadership & Management for all doctors (2012); General Medical Council Generic Professional Capabilities Framework (2017) and the Healthcare Leadership Model (2013), and builds on, the GMC guidance on Leadership and management standards for medical professionals.

The GMC have set out the behaviours needed for medical leadership and management practice across the UK health sector. These standards are designed specifically for UK-based medical professionals from all specialties, career stages and across all sectors involving healthcare. They include:

  • Personal resilience, drive and energy
  • Being a team player or team leader with the ability to work with nested teams
  • Building corporate culture and innovation
  • Designing and implementing systems leadership
