Entry requirements
A 2:1 honours degree in any relevant discipline or an equivalent qualification is required. Credit exemption may be given for appropriate certificated or experiential learning undertaken or completed within the previous five years. Consideration may be given to those who hold a lower classification who can demonstrate they are capable of performing at the level required to complete the course successfully. Admission to the MRes course is by written application (including a research proposal) and interview.

Explore Gender Through Interdisciplinary Research
The Master of Research (MRes) in Gender Studies at the University of Chester offers a unique opportunity for you to delve into the complexities of gender, feminism, and sexuality. Designed for those passionate about understanding and challenging societal norms, this course provides a rigorous academic framework and combines it with the flexibility for you to pursue individual research interests.
Course Structure and Content
You'll have two taught modules and a substantial independent research project:
- Advanced Research Methods in Gender Studies: This module will introduce you to the entire research process, from literature review to presentation of findings. You'll critically examine the role of research in producing knowledge on gender and society across academic, political, and public domains. You'll also explore various methodologies, including sociological, textual, and literary approaches, with an emphasis on feminist practices such as reflexivity and subjectivity. Ethical considerations and the impact of power dynamics in research will also be key components in your studies.
- Consensus and Dissent - Contemporary Debates in Gender Studies: You'll focus on theoretical, conceptual, and practical debates that have shaped (and continue to influence) feminist, women's, and gender studies. Topics will include women's experiences, essentialism, generational feminism, black and critical race theory, sexuality, queer theory, technologies, postcolonial theory, psychoanalytical approaches, affect and embodiment, and intersectionality.
- Research Dissertation: Under expert supervision, you'll undertake a 28,000-word dissertation on a gender-related topic of your choice, allowing for in-depth exploration and original contribution to the field.

You'll become become part of the University’s Institute of Gender Studies, a vibrant research hub that hosts regular seminars featuring both internal and international speakers. This interdisciplinary environment encourages connections across fields such as English, Sociology, Media Studies, and Religious Studies.
