Entry requirements

Entry requirements for UK students: You should have a Masters degree in a relevant field, although we will consider a good first degree instead of a Masters. You should also have at least three years’ professional experience. If English is not your first language, you may need to provide the minimum English qualification: IELTS level 6.5 (with no less than 6 in each component) by the time of entry. IELTS may not be needed if you have already obtained your degree in the UK or in an English speaking country (predominantly English speaking professional settings may be considered).

Course content

To recognise the diverse needs of today’s business professionals, we have created two DBA programmes:

DBA
The first DBA covers technical and theoretical development, professional development and research methods guidance. Professional development cycles will encourage you to make interventions in your working life to apply and reflect upon your learning.
You will be expertly supported in advancing your research capability to enable you to complete the final independent study. This study is your contribution to knowledge, an opportunity for you to generate a substantial piece of research which addresses an issue of your choosing.
Year One
· Contemporary Business and Management Practice – 20 credits
· Professional Development Cycle 1 – 20 credits
Year Two
· Designing and Executing Your Research – 20 credits
· Professional Development Cycle 2 – 20 credits
Years One and Two
· Research Skills (online) – 40 credits
Years Three-Six
· DBA Independent Study (50,000 words and viva voce)
– 420 credits

MBA to DBA
This is a unique way to study towards a doctoral qualification. You begin by studying the core of the Derby MBA but, at the independent research stage, you can choose between continuing working towards the MBA award or committing to more substantial DBA study to gain a doctoral award.
This option will suit anyone wanting to gain more diverse knowledge through studying a multitude of business functions. There is also more classroom teaching and learning as part of this programme.
