Course content

The Master of Food and Packaging Innovation is a new cross-disciplinary degree offering a range of subjects for a career in different areas of the food and packaging industry. This unique course forms part of a joint University of Melbourne and Mondelēz International initiative with the support of the Victorian Government.

The program is flexibly designed for those already working in the industry and is ideal for both current industry employees looking to upskill and progress their careers and also for local and international students seeking a broader range of skills from food science to leadership.

Upon completion of this program, graduates will have gained practical skills and knowledge across many disciplines such as project management, managing for value creation, entrepreneurship and leadership. In addition, there are the more science-based aspects in food chemistry, safety and quality, all together offering a wider range of employment pathways within the food and packaging industry.

Expert delivery

Food processing is a large and growing sector of Australian industry and through our Industry Advisory Group, a need for the skills this degree offers has been identified. The packaging subjects are interdisciplinary, with content developed to incorporate elements of marketing, safety, materials and processes. This is a university-wide course, with subjects taught across a range of faculties, ensuring expert knowledge transfer.

  • Guest lectures by some of the industry’s experts.

This program is delivered via a combination of online, evening and intensive delivery, including lectures from industry experts, and visits to manufacturers (within Melbourne and surrounds). The flexible nature of this degree allows students who are currently working full time in industry, to join this course on a part time basis, to be completed over 4 years.

The Master of Food and Packaging Innovation offers the option to complete a Minor research project on a topic that you and your course coordinator choose.

Internship opportunities

The Master of Food and Packaging Innovation includes an internship subject. This is a unique placement opportunity enabling access to some of Australia’s most well-known brands and state of the art facilities. There will be internship placement opportunities with several different leading food manufacturers.

This program provides a range of opportunities not only for existing employers but within multinational food companies, small and medium enterprises looking to break into international markets, distribution and logistics firms, food safety regulators and research institutions.
