Course content
The PhD (Professional) Education offers an alternative pathway to a doctorate by combining advanced study of educational epistemology and research methodology with critical engagement in the intersections of research, policy, and practice. Delivered in two stages, the programme begins with Stage 1, where you complete 180 credits of Level 7 taught modules and a research pilot project designed to build foundational knowledge, research skills, and academic writing. Progressing to Stage 2, you undertake 360 credits at Level 8, working closely with a supervisory team to produce an original 55,000–60,000-word thesis and further develop your research expertise. Alongside structured milestones (RDCom2 and RDCom3) and opportunities for peer review, the programme emphasises independent inquiry, criticality, and professional growth. Graduates emerge with advanced analytical, communication, and research skills that support leadership and career progression within education and related fields.
