Course content
The PsychD in Counselling Psychology is a professional doctorate designed to prepare you for eligibility to register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Counselling Psychologist. The programme integrates advanced academic study, supervised clinical practice and doctoral-level research to support your development as a reflective, ethical and adaptable practitioner.
Across Levels 7 and 8, you will explore person-centred, pluralistic and integrative therapeutic approaches, alongside professional ethics, critical research skills and social justice in practice. Equity, diversity and inclusion are embedded throughout the curriculum, ensuring you are equipped to work effectively with the UK’s diverse communities and in a range of clinical contexts.
A substantial element of the programme involves supervised clinical placements, enabling you to apply theory to real-world practice within the NHS, third sector and private settings. You will also complete doctoral research, strengthening your ability to contribute to evidence-based practice and contemporary psychological scholarship.
The programme supports the development of clinical competence, research capability, digital literacy and professional resilience, preparing you for careers in clinical practice, research, consultancy, teaching and leadership within mental health and related fields.
