Course content
PGCert Music for Children with Special Abilities and Needs: Sounds of Intent is a postgraduate certificate delivered online only. The programme runs part-time over one year.
Grounded in the Sounds of Intent framework, the course explores inclusive musical development across educational, therapeutic and community settings. It is designed for educators, musicians, therapists, clinicians, parents, carers and others committed to inclusive practice. Students develop theoretical understanding and practical expertise in observing, assessing and promoting musical progress for children and young people with diverse abilities and needs, including those across the spectrum of neurodiversity.
The programme is delivered online over three terms and includes live sessions with the option to learn asynchronously. Students explore the application of Sounds of Intent in practice with learners with autism, sensory impairments, severe learning difficulties, profound and multiple learning difficulties and other developmental differences. Ethical practice, sustainable approaches to music making and the use of assistive technologies to support access and participation are also examined.
A professional placement forms part of the programme, enabling students to apply their learning in a specialist or inclusive music education or community setting and reflect on their practice in context.
