Integrated study

If you have a research study in mind that would make an original contribution to your chosen field but do not have a Master’s degree that included a significant research element, our Integrated PhD may be the right choice for you.

The integrated PhD is ideally suited to students who need to strengthen their foundational research skills and their research proposal before embarking on the research project that leads to their PhD thesis. The final award is the same as that which can be achieved by direct entry to the PhD.
Research themes includ
  • Educational effectiveness and improvement
  • Higher education policy and practice
  • Leadership in education
  • Mathematics, science and health education
  • Social and educational inclusion
A major attraction of the Integrated PhD is that much of the work that you undertake for assessment during the initial skills development phase of the course can be turned into material for drafting parts of your PhD thesis.
  • Ranked seventh in the UK for research impact (latest REF, 2014)
  • Carrying out world-leading research in higher education, social justice and inclusive education, educational effectiveness, mathematics, science and health education
This is an intensive programme that integrates a substantial programme of seminars, workshops and lectures designed to develop foundational research skills, subject-specific knowledge of Education as a discipline alongside the development of a wide range of transferable skills. You will be expected to successfully complete a range of research and Education modules, including taught sessions, before progressing onto the thesis stage of your PhD.
