Course content

  • In the Age of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the study of intelligent and adaptive systems is essential. On this course, you’ll develop a strong understanding of the field through areas such as machine learning, natural language processing, robotics, consciousness and cognitive science.
By studying at Sussex, you will:
    • benefit from our unique, historic strength of interdisciplinarity between AI, cognitive science and neuroscience
    • develop a comprehensive understanding of intelligence and adaptive behaviour in both artificial and living systems
    • explore the theory and mathematical foundations of AI and machine learning
    • develop techniques for designing and implementing artificial systems in practice
    • learn from experts at the forefront of their fields.
You’ll join a thriving community of research excellence. We're home to leading research hubs including Sussex AI, the Data Science Research Group and the Sussex Centre for Consciousness Science.
This course provides a strong foundation in AI, with modules in mathematics for complex systems, machine learning and adaptive systems. From there, you can choose to organise your studies around one or more subdisciplines:
    • robotics, autonomous systems and artificial life
    • machine learning and natural language processing
    • computational biology, cognitive science and consciousness science.
You’ll also refine your technical report skills through select modules and your MSc project.
When you graduate, you’ll be prepared for a career in AI and adaptive systems development. Alternatively, you may decide to pursue further study. To help you gain experience and increase your employability, you can apply for an optional placement as part of your course. This can be a fantastic opportunity to gain real-life insight into industry as well as skills valued by employers. You’ll be responsible for applying for and securing your placement. Our dedicated careers team can help you:
    • find an employer
    • draft an application
    • prepare for interviews.
Don’t worry if you’re not successful, you’ll simply transfer to a non-placement version of your course.
