You will be expected to have at least a 2: 1 honours degree in a relevant subject. If you are a non-native English speaking applicant you must provide evidence of your English language ability. Course content

The MA in Social Research has been specifically designed to develop your methodological skills and research techniques, providing you with the necessary knowledge and skills to undertake study at doctorate level or to follow a career in academia, government or commercial research.

The programme offers cutting-edge teaching. You will investigate new methods of digital data analysis – from learning how the data is created to analysing the information and exploring the opportunities and challenges presented by the availability of these new data forms.

The York Sociology Department is the ideal place for those who wish to learn more about social research. This in-depth and highly relevant degree will introduce you to the key elements of social research, providing you with access to knowledgeable staff and allowing you to explore key sociological areas such as culture, criminology, political economy, psychology, philosophy and psychoanalysis.

You will gain in-depth knowledge of a range of research methods, developing skills in both qualitative and quantitative research and data analysis. You will develop the most effective techniques to observe and conduct interviews and you will become proficient in the dissemination of information gathered. You will also be introduced to a range of statistical techniques such as descriptive statistics, chi-squared tests, and regression analysis, but also innovative techniques, such as multiple correspondence analysis.
