Entry requirements

To be eligible for entry to the programme, students will normally have:

  • A good honours degree which confers the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC)* with the British Psychological Society (BPS) or other undergraduate degree with relevant conversion course. This would normally be a minimum of 2:1 in Psychology; applicants with a lower degree but supplemented by additional postgraduate study or relevant experience may also be considered.
  • A satisfactory DBS Enhanced Disclosure.
  • A commitment to undertake personal therapy and clinical supervision.
*The evidence for GBC would normally be in the form of a letter from the BPS confirming that you have been granted GBC. If you are unsure whether your undergraduate degree confers GBC then please check with the BPS website under the list of accredited programmes.

Course content

This programme will be accredited as conferring eligibility for chartered membership as a Counselling Psychologist with the British Psychological Society, and for registration as a practitioner psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council. There is an emphasis on the cognitive behavioural and humanistic approaches in the development of counselling and psychotherapy skills.

The programme includes psychological assessment; psychotherapeutic interventions for adults, adolescents, children, couples, groups and families; clinical research methods; ethics and professional practice; a doctoral research dissertation; and a minimum of 450 hours of placement in clinical settings. Students will also undertake modules that develop the professional skills required of leaders and supervisors, and for working in diverse, multi-disciplinary teams.

Information for international students

International students will need to demonstrate that they have equivalent experience /qualifications as home students (ie same entry criteria as above). If their first language is not English they must show evidence of English Language competence at IELTS level 6.0 (in all areas of the test) or equivalent.
