The CILEX Professional Qualification (CPQ) is the route to becoming a CILEX Paralegal, CILEX Advanced Paralegal, or CILEX Lawyer. It is a competency-based qualification framework, that has core legal knowledge and commercial awareness at its heart. Each stage combines a focus on technical expertise and practical skills with the development of the core behaviours required to create forward-thinking, commercially minded, adaptable lawyers who really understand the clients they serve.

Law Training Centre’s CPQ Foundation course will supplement the published core reading from CILEx, offering current, practice-based directions, outlines, and discussion on everyday subject-specific matters to add value to each learner’s journey.

CILEX Paralegals will be able to demonstrate a fundamental awareness of the law underpinning key practice areas by completing the CILEX Professional Qualification (CPQ) Foundation stage. In addition, trainees on the CPQ Foundation stage are required to evidence their competence via their Professional Experience portfolio and to complete the first of the Ethics and Professional Responsibility e-learning modules.

Career Prospects

If you are interested in working in the legal profession, the CPQ offers a structured, progressive training route that will enable you to qualify as a CILEx Paralegal, CILEx Advanced Paralegal or CILEx Lawyer.

Successful completion of CPQ Foundation and Advanced stages will allow trainees to call themselves CILEX Paralegals or CILEX Advanced Paralegals respectively, communicating thereby to the wider market their level of professional knowledge and competence.

Course Content

The Foundation Stage of the CPQ has six mandatory modules in total:

  • Legal Systems
  • Law of Tort
  • Contract Law
  • Ethics and Professional Responsibility part 1 (e-learning module)
  • Professional Skills (succeeding in a legal environment and legal research)
  • Introduction to Property and Private Client

Please note, you will have to complete a Professional Experience Portfolio (to be completed with your employer). This will allow you to record your work-based competence at the Foundation stage. If you are unable to complete this then you will not be awarded the CILEX Paralegal qualification. However, you will still be able to progress onto the next academic stage.

Professional Experience

At every stage of CPQ, you will be expected to demonstrate that you are competent against the criteria of the competency framework relevant to your job role and CPQ stage. This will be done via an online portfolio and your experience will need to be validated by your employer. For more information on the Professional Experience element of CPQ, see here.

Please note – All learners are required to complete their Professional Experience requirement to become CILEx Paralegals: https://www.cilex.org.uk/cilex_lawyer/about_cpq/professional_experience
