Course content

Senior Leader Apprenticeships are an innovative way of retaining talent in your organisation. Apprentices are employed by you but study at Loughborough University, and are selected and supported by your organisation to take part.

Our part-time Senior Leader Apprenticeship – Executive MBA pathway is specifically for employers looking to invest in their current and future leaders.

The Apprenticeship is fully funded through the Apprenticeship Levy and there’s the option to complete a top-up year for the full Executive MBA award – a globally recognised qualification.

Benefits to employers

You identify and support the individuals you think would be best suited to this programme, which is designed to stretch and equip participants to apply the latest global management theory in practice.

Both during and on completing the programme, apprentices bring a host of new ideas and insights to your organisation by:

  • learning how to manage complex business challenges
  • adapting to new scenarios
  • exploring creative solutions to contemporary issues
  • leading innovative change programmes to capitalise on new opportunities
  • becoming effective leaders of people.

Apprentices complete work-based assignments to explore and come up with new ways to tackle current problems, enabling them to improve your organisational effectiveness as they enhance their leadership skills.

Apprentices spend time away from their job, studying through a mix of face-to-face, interactive online and work-based learning. The rest of their time is spent in the workplace applying their new skills and knowledge to your organisation. This enables them to balance their work commitments with studying part time at one of the UK’s leading business schools.

Benefits to apprentices

By taking part in this transformational programme, participants are supported to take their career and impact to the most senior levels.

The apprenticeship covers all the relevant aspects of leadership and management, tapping into Loughborough’s world-leading research in everything from globalisation and the digital economy, to the future of work, change management and coaching.

As apprentices progress, they develop a sought-after toolkit of practical skills, learning to think critically, produce persuasive business reports, and harness the latest leadership and coaching techniques.

Learning alongside a cohort of motivated managers, participants build skills in resourcing strategic initiatives. They also become adept at working with information management specialists, and learn to address new challenges facing businesses in areas such as AI, digital data and safeguarding.

The blended learning approach, with block face-to-face teaching and online content, helps participants to balance their learning, work and personal commitments more easily.

After successful completion of the two-year programme and an End Point Assessment, each apprentice receives two awards: a Postgraduate Diploma and Senior Leader Level 7 Apprenticeship. They then have the option to continue onto the third year to complete the Loughborough Executive MBA.

Support throughout the work-based learning

Each apprentice works with an Academic Mentor from Loughborough Business School, along with a Work-Based Mentor chosen by you. These mentors support the apprentice, mapping their learning across to the apprenticeship standards, and making sure you and they get the most from the programme. Our Workplace Learning Specialist, and experienced academic and administrative teams, are also there to support you and your apprentices throughout.
