Overview

Embrace advances in technology and help to shape the future with this unique masters degree. 3D design and digital manufacturing technologies are advancing at an incredible rate. We live in an age where it is possible to 3D print everything from cars to clothing and even entire houses, with scientists currently exploring the possibility of 3D printing human organs for transplant. 

Gaining this qualification is your chance to be at the forefront of a huge growth area. Multinational aerospace businesses, major sportswear manufacturers, the health service and more are all investing heavily in 3D print technology. This innovative course offers hands-on training in the fascinating field of digital manufacturing and aims to educate and develop industry-ready professionals. 

A wide range of units will develop your skills in computer-aided design, modelling and industrial sustainability. As well as 3D printing, course content has been designed to train students in all aspects of Industry 4.0, and explores The Internet of Things, generative design and even augmented and virtual reality. 

This masters course is positioned at the cutting-edge of technology and examines how UK manufacturing could be transformed through the adoption of industrial digital technologies. As such, as part of this course, you will visit complex technical organisations to witness the impact that is being made.

Optional placement year

The optional industry placement provides you with the opportunity to apply your academic knowledge in the workplace. Through this, you’ll gain additional specialist expertise and transferable skills through responsibilities and contributions to the employer’s business. 

Following completion of the taught elements of your MSc course, you can gain additional practice credits by working for a minimum of 36 weeks and a maximum of 42 weeks in an industrial setting, relevant to your course. 

It’s your responsibility to search and apply for advertised placement opportunities, but you’ll be supported by academic staff and the University’s Careers and Employability Service to find a placement that is suited to you and your career ambitions. However, not all students can be guaranteed a placement. 

All placements are approved and monitored in accordance with the University’s Institutional Code of Practice for Placement and Work‐Based Learning, including additional checks for international students on study visas. 

On placement, your academic tutor and workplace mentor will provide support and progress checks. 

A placement fee of £1,850 applies.

The digital skills and knowledge gained throughout MSc Digital Design and Manufacturing will allow graduates to embark on exciting careers within Industry 4.0 and be well-positioned to disrupt industries or businesses that have yet to make the switch.
