Overview

Sexuality, racism, gender, disability, mental health, abuse – in the past these subjects weren’t talked about in the world of sport. But times have changed and our understanding of how the mind affects the body has dramatically advanced. The role of psychology has also grown, not just to support wellbeing but to deliver better sporting results. It’s no surprise then, that the demand for highly trained sport and exercise psychologists is on the rise. Psychology matters, whether you’re an elite athlete, a keen amateur or an army veteran recovering from injury.

Our MSc is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS). This means if you want to become a chartered sport and exercise psychologist and have already completed an accredited undergraduate or top up course then by the end of this masters you’re halfway there.

You'll learn about neuroscience and become highly skilled in research while using the very latest sport and exercise laboratory equipment. For example, you’ll get your hands on eye-tracking technology, which is used to help cricketers hit more runs, as well as virtual reality software used by professional footballers as a safer way to train for goal-scoring headers.

You’ll gain the critical thinking skills, communication skills and knowledge of ethics you'll need to make informed decisions to support and advise others. You’ll be taught by experts in their fields, including accredited sport and exercise psychologists and experienced researchers. Many also have professional sport sector experience, with well-established links and contacts throughout the industry. Others have worked as consultants with some of the world’s leading performers in a variety of sports.

This course could inspire you to study a PhD, start your own business or provide you with the skills and experience to land your first professional job. Whatever you decide to do, you’ll benefit from learning at our state-of-the-art Manchester Metropolitan University Institute of Sport, with world-class tutors, equipment, technology and facilities.

Career prospects

The demand for highly trained sport and exercise psychologists in the UK and around the world is increasing and this course has been designed to meet the needs of the industry of tomorrow.

Our MSc has been accredited by the British Psychological Society. Completion is equal to Stage 1 of the 2-stage training process required to become a Chartered Sport and Exercise Psychologist with the Health and Care Professionals Council registration in the UK. Whether or not that’s your plan, this professional grounding will offer a firm foundation for a career in sport psychology or a related field.

This postgraduate course could be a stepping stone towards PhD-level research or running your own business as a consultant or coach. You might be interested in a clinical role, supporting people recovering from injury, living with illness or supporting healthy ageing. You might get involved in staff wellbeing programmes for a global company or work for a sports club supporting elite athletes or teams.
