Course content

Transform your understanding of language, culture, and communication—and prepare for an international career in language education.

Overview

The Cross-Cultural Communication and Applied Linguistics MA offers theory, research, and practical training. This covers international and intercultural communication, alongside foreign and second language learning and teaching.

We also provide training on the analysis of language in use in a variety of settings, and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).

The Applied Linguistics pathway is a specialism on the Cross-Cultural Communication MA.

Read more about the Cross-Cultural Communication element on the programme landing page.

Lecturers from both Applied Linguistics and Cross-Cultural Communication combine to deliver this programme.

Our Applied Linguistics academic staff have teaching and research expertise in:

  • second language acquisition
  • classroom interaction
  • teaching and learning English through media and technology
  • teacher development
  • discourse analysis
  • multimodal interaction

Read more about the staff who deliver this programme.

If you're interested in a career in language teaching, but have little or no previous teaching experience, you can take introductory modules in TESOL. You'll gain practical skills and knowledge needed for language teaching and learning.

What you'll learn

Language and communication modules

This strand is delivered by academic staff in Applied Linguistics and Communication within the School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences. The strand comprises one compulsory module and a number of optional modules available to all cross-cultural communication students. These modules make up half the MA programme. Through these, you will develop your understanding of intercultural communication theory and research, and become familiar with professional practice in intercultural and cross-cultural contexts.

Applied linguistics pathway-specific modules

Applied Linguistics staff deliver the modules on language teaching and learning. You'll study with other students of the Applied Linguistics & TESOL programme.

You'll have the opportunity to develop:

  • an understanding of the theories, principles, concepts and methodologies in applied linguistics and TESOL
  • a critical awareness of key issues or debates concerning teaching and learning English as a second/foreign language

You'll gain an in-depth knowledge of methodologies and techniques applicable to research in areas of applied linguistics and TESOL. These include:

  • corpus linguistics
  • multimodal analysis
  • discourse analysis
  • conversation analysis
