Course content

SOAS’s Centre for Translation Studies (CTS) was established in 2008. The CTS aims at exploring and developing area-based Translation Studies across Asia, Africa and the Middle East. While addressing questions of Translation Studies, which developed largely based on western languages, the CTS aims to focus and shed light on regional translation practice, theory, and philosophy. For this purpose, the CTS organises conferences, symposia, workshops, and seminar series, and supports the publication of research in Translation Studies in the contexts of Asia and Africa.

With SOAS expertise in more than 40 Asian and African languages and cultures, and academic staff who passionately study these, the CTS aims at establishing new perspectives through area-based Translation Studies.

The CTS functions as an intellectual home not only for academic staff but also for the MA Translation and PhD students working on Translation Studies. Student members of the CTS play an active part in the Centre and organise postgraduate seminars and conferences.
