In Headship
Entry requirements
On successful completion of the PgCert Into Headship and on appointment to a headship post, you have the opportunity to undertake the PgDip In Headship, which will incorporate your certificate courses. You will take two core courses and one optional course.
You're required:
- A degree or equivalent qualification in Education or a related field.
- A teaching qualification and full GTCS registration.
- Experience in a senior leadership role.
- Successful outcome at interview with the local authority and university partners.
- A reference from your employer which endorses and supports your application and demonstrates that you have access to a suitable workplace environment.
- You also need to be in a Headteacher position.

Course content
In Headship is a professional programme designed for aspiring school principals and school leaders in Scotland to enable them to attain the Standard for Headship (GTCS, 2012). Through professional pedagogies, it focuses specifically on enabling you to develop a strategic approach to educational change.
- The programme is designed to enable you to develop your personal capacity and capability to lead change for improvement and work with your school and its community to realise its strategic vision.
- You will have opportunities to engage directly with policy makers through guest lectures by expert practitioners and leading researchers.
- There is emphasis on the interrelationship between professional and academic perspectives, practice and theory, and between the different sites of learning/practice, in order that individual professional learning is interconnected with collective school improvement.
- Accredited by the General Teaching Council Scotland, this programme aligns with the Framework for Educational Leadership and is part of the national programme for the specialist qualification for headship in Scotland.
Information for international students
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic and Academic Online (not General Training)
- 6.5 overall with no subtest less than 6.0
- IELTS One Skill Retake Accepted
- Tests must have been taken within 2 years 5 months of programme start date. Applicants must meet the overall and subtest requirements using a single test.
