Course content

The Masters in Computational Geoscience explores how we model the natural world and the environment around us (and the processes that create them). You will develop applied data science and modelling skills which you can use to address complex real-world challenges and support decision-making in geoscience fields. You will develop skills that are in high-demand in the geoscience sector, including computer programming, predictive modelling and big data analysis.

Why this programme

  • This programme is one of very few in the UK to focus on computational modelling in geosciences and is unique to Scotland.
  • Our specifically designed courses will provide both an introduction to earth sciences and the mathematical foundations needed to succeed in this programme. This will support both science and engineering students and students from earth, environmental, and planetary sciences.
  • The programme is highly-applied and has been developed in consultation with industry to ensure our graduates are equipped with the knowledge and skills to meet global demands for professionals in this field.
  • Our research-led teaching is delivered by academics at the forefront of debates in geomorphology, geomagnetism, geophysics, plate tectonics, and structural and reservoir modelling within the earth systems science field.
  • You will learn to solve specific applied questions using a range of coding languages including Python.
  • You will benefit from access to our extensive computer laboratories and the latest software packages.
  • Project work and continuous assessment will also help you to develop professional skills, including project management, communication, and presentation skills.
  • The School of Geographical and Earth Sciences has an Athena Swan Silver Award, demonstrating the school's commitment to supporting women in scientific studies and careers and improving the working environment for all.
