Studying Pharmaceutical Research, Development and Safety

The Master’s Programme in Pharmaceutical Research, Development and Safety (MPHARM) provides a comprehensive understanding of the full life cycle of medicines and their use in society.

The programme comprises 120 ECTS credits, corresponding to two years of full-time study, and leads to the degree of Master of Science. Unlike the Master of Pharmacy degree, this programme does not confer a licensed healthcare professional qualification within the EU. Teaching is delivered by an international team of world-class researchers in a research-driven environment that uses modern pedagogical approaches and integrates cutting-edge scientific work into learning.

Why study pharmaceutical research, development and safety?

An ageing population and the growing need for rapidly advancing medical treatments highlight the increasing importance of experts in pharmaceuticals, drug use, and regulatory processes.

In this programme, you will:

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of the life cycle of medicines and their use
  • Develop a unique perspective on green and sustainable pharmacy, and learn to address global sustainability challenges in pharmaceuticals
  • Prepare for research and development (R&D) roles, as well as positions in healthcare regulation, policy-making, pharmaceutical management, and industry

The degree is awarded by the Faculty of Pharmacy, a leading research institution with strong international networks and significant external research funding.

Learning outcomes

After completing the MSc in Pharmaceutical Research, Development and Safety, you will have developed the following knowledge and skills:

Core academic competencies:

  • A thorough understanding of the drug life cycle and its application in pharmaceutical research, development, and use
  • Strong command of key pharmaceutical research questions at both theoretical and methodological levels
  • Understanding of the roles of institutions and stakeholders in drug development and pharmacotherapy
  • Awareness of sustainability aspects in pharmaceuticals and the ability to apply this knowledge in practice

Professional skills:

  • Ability to formulate research questions and design scientifically sound approaches to answer them
  • Mastery of key research methods and evidence-based working practices
  • Capability to conduct research in international and multidisciplinary environments
  • Strong communication skills for presenting pharmaceutical research to both experts and general audiences
  • Development of a professional identity as a pharmaceutical sciences expert and understanding of career potential in the field

Who should apply?

This programme is suitable for students who want to engage in multidisciplinary life science and health science studies within a strong academic research community. It is particularly relevant for those aiming for careers in academia, the pharmaceutical industry, or public sector organisations.

If you are seeking a research-oriented education in pharmaceutical sciences rather than clinical qualification, this programme is an ideal choice. However, if you aim to become a licensed healthcare professional, you should apply to the Master of Pharmacy programme instead.

A Bachelor’s degree is required for eligibility. Applicants from pharmacy, chemistry, life sciences, and related fields are welcome, provided they have sufficient prior knowledge to complete the programme within two years.

In 2026, the programme will admit up to 25 students.
