Course content

The Human Rights MA examines the development, interpretation and practice of human rights from an interdisciplinary perspective. The programme combines approaches from law, philosophy, sociology and international relations to explore how human rights ideas, institutions and movements operate in global and local contexts.

Students investigate the historical development of human rights and analyse how international justice systems, policies and advocacy shape responses to injustice. The programme explores contemporary human rights issues through case studies, theoretical perspectives and research.

The course encourages critical examination of how power, inequality, identity and social movements influence the protection and contestation of rights. Students engage with a range of perspectives and explore themes including social inequality, environmental justice, conflict, migration and global governance.

Research methods and applied practice are integrated throughout the programme. Students develop skills in critical analysis, research design and policy communication, culminating in an independent research project on a specialist human rights issue.
