Course content
This PGCE Secondary: Food and Nutrition (Design and Technology) programme prepares you to become a qualified teacher of Food and Nutrition, leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). The course combines subject knowledge development, practical cookery training, and extensive classroom experience to equip you with the skills needed to teach this subject effectively in secondary schools.
Delivered in partnership with Leiths Education, the programme blends academic study with specialist culinary training and practical teaching experience. You will develop both the pedagogical knowledge required to teach in schools and the practical food preparation skills needed to lead engaging cookery lessons.
A key part of the course is hands-on experience in schools. You will complete at least 120 days of school placements across two different schools, where you will gain real classroom experience while being supported by experienced mentors.
Alongside school placements, you will participate in specialist food teaching days delivered jointly by Roehampton and Leiths Education. These sessions focus on practical teaching strategies, food preparation techniques, health and safety in food rooms, and the delivery of engaging and effective food education.
You will also complete written assignments and professional development activities designed to help you reflect on your teaching practice and develop as an educator.
Graduates of the programme will be fully prepared to teach Food and Nutrition in secondary schools, combining practical subject expertise with strong teaching and classroom management skills.
