Entry requirements

A good 2.1 Honours undergraduate degree in a Modern Language or Comparative Literature in the relevant pathway subject. Secondary pathway subjects cannot be taken at beginner's level.

Course content

Expand your academic understanding of Russian culture, literature, and language. Alongside an in-depth exploration of theory and training in research methodologies, you will pursue directed study into topics that will broaden and develop your own research interests.

Within the Russian studies pathway, the optional modules allow you to acquire advanced knowledge of the inter-related fields of Russian literature, culture, and history from the 19th century to the present day. You may also undertake guided study on a specialised topic drawing on research expertise in the Department of Russian.

The final part of the programme is a supervised research project in which you will explore a topic in depth. Research specialisms within the Department of Russian include:

  • literary theory
  • poetry
  • crime fiction
  • gothic
  • realism
  • cultural memory
  • film
  • Russian avant-garde
  • Russian and Soviet theatre
  • celebrity
  • gender and queer theory in Russia.
