• Bachelors degree with Honours at 2:2 or above, or equivalent level.
• At least Grade C or the new Grade 4 in GCSE English and Mathematics.*

*The new grading system for those receiving their results for GCSE Maths and English was adopted in 2017. The grading system is now 9-1, with Grade 9 awarded to those students in the very top tier. Grade 4 is considered equivalent to the old Grade C.

Course content

There has never been a more exciting time to train to be a Geography teacher. You will be enabling the next generation to understand and contribute to their world, inspiring them to take on the challenges of the future as well as providing them with some of the best and most important transferable skills.

Our course balances theory with the practical in a highly supportive way. During subject sessions, you will develop your geographical knowledge and understanding so that you are confident delivering at KS3, GCSE and A level. This will particularly include:

• Exploring how to use the geographical enquiry approach to sequence and plan high quality, contemporary geographical learning.

• Developing an appreciation of how we can show the world to young people through our choice of places to study

• Planning and delivering locally based fieldwork to A level students

• Practising the use of GIS to inspire modern geographers to look at patterns and provide solutions

• Linking to exam boards and associations to understand assessment in Geography

The course provides you with extensive time in school, working with experienced teachers who will model strong pedagogy, support you as you grow and empower you to reflect on your practice. You and your mentor in school are supported by University tutors throughout the course.

Training to be a Geography teacher is possible with a Geography or Geography related degree (e.g. environmental management, environmental sciences, geology, or planning and development).

Course overview

Our Secondary Postgraduate Certificate in Education focuses on the 11-18 age range. Our course will develop you into a highly effective teacher, equipped with the values, skills and knowledge to become a successful school leader.

In partnership with regional schools, we will ensure that you have the skills and knowledge needed to forge a strong personal and professional identity, which you will continue to develop throughout your career. What is a PGCE?

A Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) is usually a one-year teacher training course. It offers a mixture of academic and practical learning, and it's the first step for graduates in the development of a teaching career. At Warwick, our PGCE courses provide a recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS – a requirement to teach in the state school system as a Newly Qualified Teacher).
