• Bachelors degree with Honours at 2:2 or above, or equivalent level.
• At least Grade C or the new Grade 4 in GCSE English and Mathematics.*

*The new grading system for those receiving their results for GCSE Maths and English was adopted in 2017. The grading system is now 9-1, with Grade 9 awarded to those students in the very top tier. Grade 4 is considered equivalent to the old Grade C.

Course content

This course emphasises fundamental principles of fluency, mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills, recognising the crucial role of mathematics in equipping young learners for a complex world. Integrating content, curriculum and pedagogical content knowledge through research and evidence-based practices, the PGCE maths also introduce and apply the five key ideas of Teaching for Mastery: coherence, fluency, representation & structure, variation, and mathematical thinking.

You will be taught by experienced mathematics educators with research and publications in areas related to practitioner research, teaching for mastery, maths anxiety and mathematical resilience, and teacher resilience. Building on your subject and pedagogy knowledge, you will engage in subject sessions linking theory to practice. Pedagogy covered includes effective lesson planning, addressing mathematical misconceptions, developing metacognition and teaching for creativity, equipping you with essential skills to excel as a trainee mathematics teacher.

You will benefit from dedicated mentoring by experienced Mathematics teachers in our partner schools and engaging guest lectures from these schools, fostering your development into a research-informed and creative maths teacher. Our collaboration with the regional Maths Hub on teaching for mastery further enriches the course, providing valuable practical and theoretical insights into mathematics education.

Our Secondary Postgraduate Certificate in Education focuses on the 11-18 age range. Our course will develop you into a highly effective teacher, equipped with the values, skills and knowledge to become a successful school leader.

What is a PGCE?

A Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) is usually a one-year teacher training course. It offers a mixture of academic and practical learning, and it's the first step for graduates in the development of a teaching career. At Warwick, our PGCE courses provide a recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS – a requirement to teach in the state school system as a Newly Qualified Teacher).
