Course content
Central to the MFL curriculum are the Warwick Teacher Values (WTV): creativity, intellectual curiosity & social justice. All sessions interweave educational theory and research with application to classroom practice. Sessions also include opportunities for trainees to reflect on their individual development both in university and on placement. MFL sessions throughout the academic year aim to develop subject knowledge, introduce pedagogies, promote pupil progress and support trainees with both their academic assignments and classroom practice. MFL sessions strive to be inclusive, model best practice, and be research informed enabling trainees to become involved in critical discussion which supports the WTV of intellectual curiosity.
You will be taught by an experienced MFL educator with two decades of teaching experience. Pedagogy covered includes effective lesson planning, teaching using the target language, formative assessment and responsive teaching, adaptive teaching, teaching at KS3, KS4 and KS5 and developing metacognition. These sessions, alongside others, equip you with essential skills to excel as a trainee MFL teacher.
You will develop your subject content, curriculum and pedagogical knowledge and understanding allowing you time to develop your skills and knowledge of what it is to be an effective MFL teacher. You will begin to engage with your emerging teacher identities, values and philosophies, moving yourselves towards independence and enabling yourselves to develop resilience.
In our partner schools, you will benefit from dedicated mentoring by experienced MFL teachers. You will also benefit from a tailored course with regular tutorials designed to ensure your success, alongside comprehensive support in securing employment, including expert guidance on applications, CVs, and the interview process, to confidently launch your career as a teacher of MFL.
Previous students have consistently rated the course as excellent and intellectually stimulating, emphasising its effectiveness in preparing them not just to survive but to thrive as secondary MFL teachers.

What is a PGCE?
A Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) is usually a one-year teacher training course. It offers a mixture of academic and practical learning, and it's the first step for graduates in the development of a teaching career. At Warwick, our PGCE courses provide a recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS – a requirement to teach in the state school system as a Newly Qualified Teacher).
