As we strive for a more inclusive society, creating scholarships and investing in women's education remains the most effective way to unlock female potential as leaders, innovators, and change-makers

What is International Women's Day?

Celebrated annually on March 8th, International Women's Day commemorates women's achievements and calls for action towards gender equality.

As a young woman from the North East I chanced upon a scholarship advertisement for a Masters degree on the Newcastle University LinkedIn page. Intrigued and inspired, I applied for the International Multimedia Journalism course and within three months, was delighted to have secured a place and met my sponsor.

Receiving the Jane Constance Scholarship - specifically aimed at women from my region looking to carve a career in writing - was a game-changer for me. It opened up several opportunities I would never have had access to, such as training with established journalists from Sky, the BBC and more. The scholarship also gave me a financial safety net when I relocated to Manchester to work for Jisc.

After his wife's passing, Simon Constance established a scholarship in her memory. Jane could not fulfil her media career dream due to early-life socioeconomic barriers and later childcare responsibilities, as Simon explains, 'she came from a very typical North East mining family background and was the first in her family to go to university. However, when she left education, there was a very limited view of what she should do after. As a family, we thought something we could do was to try to create more opportunities for women like her - to get that voice into the mainstream media.'

The landscape of scholarship opportunities available for women is constantly expanding, so if you're looking to apply for a scholarship, read on to discover the options in your field.
