Studying Urban Studies and Planning
The Master’s Programme in Urban Studies and Planning prepares students to become professionals capable of understanding and addressing complex urban development challenges.
The programme combines theoretical, historical, and conceptual knowledge with practical skills, methods, and real-world experience. Students develop both a broad understanding of urban phenomena and hands-on experience in collaborative, practice-oriented settings.
Below you will find a detailed overview of the programme structure and curriculum. Teaching is conducted in English. Examinations may also be completed in Finnish or Swedish, and the Master’s thesis can be written in English, Finnish, or Swedish depending on the language of the degree.
Why study Urban Studies and Planning?
Urbanisation is a global process that shapes the future of societies. Cities are where many of today’s most pressing social, economic, environmental, and cultural challenges emerge—and where they must also be addressed. While cities offer significant opportunities for innovation, growth, and cultural development, they are also sites of inequality, segregation, and environmental and health-related challenges.
Because of the complexity of these issues, no single discipline can address them alone. Urban development requires an integrated, multidisciplinary approach. To meet this need, two leading Finnish universities have joined forces to offer this unique interdisciplinary Master’s Programme in Urban Studies and Planning.
As a graduate of the programme, you will be able to:
- Apply key concepts and frameworks to analyse and critically evaluate urban issues in professional contexts
- Recognise the multidisciplinary foundations of urban studies and planning
- Use appropriate methods and tools to address both practical and research-oriented urban challenges
- Collect, analyse, and produce knowledge on urban phenomena
- Develop your own disciplinary expertise while engaging across fields
- Strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration skills
- Participate in public discussions on contemporary urban issues

Structure, content, and courses
The Master’s Programme in Urban Studies and Planning comprises 120 ECTS credits and is designed to be completed in two years of full-time study. At the University of Helsinki, the programme is structured as follows:
Core skills and methods (20 credits)
These foundational studies support thesis work and professional practice. Students are introduced to key approaches in urban studies and planning, as well as essential academic and professional skills, including digital analysis, visual communication, argumentation, and research methodologies.
Core courses include:
- USP-301 Introduction to Urban Studies and Planning (10 cr)
- USP-302 Research Methods (5 cr) (or an alternative methodology course)
- USP-303 Urban GIS and Visual Tools (5 cr)
Urban Challenge Studios (20 credits)
The Urban Challenge Studios bring together students from different disciplines to work on real-world urban issues. These courses emphasise design thinking, experimentation, transdisciplinarity, and problem-solving through collaborative, practice-based learning.
- USP-304 Urban Challenge Studio 1 (10 cr)
- USP-305 Urban Challenge Studio 2 (10 cr)
Specialisation module (20 credits)
Students choose one of three interdisciplinary study tracks: People, Plans, or Systems. These modules allow specialisation within the broader field of urban studies and planning, drawing on courses from both partner universities.
Topics may include urban geography, sociology, ecology, economics, ethnology, history, environmental policy, urban planning, urban design, landscape architecture, real estate economics, and strategic or service design.
Students select their study track during the first year.
More information is available on the People, Plans, and Systems modules.
Elective studies (25 credits)
Students may tailor their degree through elective courses aligned with their interests and career goals. These may deepen specialisation or broaden expertise into other fields. Electives can also include courses from other Finnish universities, international exchange studies, language studies, or internships. For some professional groups, such as architects and landscape architects, electives may also align with EU qualification requirements.
Master’s thesis (30 credits) and Master’s seminar (5 credits)
The Master’s thesis is an independent piece of applied research addressing a relevant problem in the field, based on scientific knowledge and responsible research practices. Topics are agreed upon between the student and supervisor(s), and the thesis may take different forms, including academic research, work within a larger research project, or a professionally oriented study conducted with external partners.
Students also participate in a Master’s seminar (5 credits), where they present their work at different stages, engage in academic discussion, act as opponents, and receive guidance on research and academic writing.
Courses and additional studies
Students can explore current courses through the University of Helsinki Studies Service, which provides up-to-date information on teaching and study options. The University also offers Finnish language courses for international students.
