Studying Microbiology and Microbial Biotechnology
In the Master’s Programme in Microbiology and Microbial Biotechnology, you study the essential roles of microbes in sustaining life and shaping the environment, while developing practical skills for careers in the food industry, medical sector, and a wide range of biotechnological applications. The programme allows you to tailor your studies by combining courses in environmental microbiology, food microbiology, medical microbiology, microbial bioinformatics, microbial biotechnology, mycology, and virology.
Why study Microbiology and Microbial Biotechnology?
This programme focuses on microbes, their biotechnological uses, and the research methods applied to study viruses, bacteria, and other microorganisms.
Upon completing the programme, you will:
- Understand the global importance of microbes as drivers of life and environmental processes
- Gain knowledge of key functions and molecular mechanisms of major microbial groups
- Understand how microbes can be used in biotechnology, including food production, pharmaceuticals, and industrial processes
- Assess how environmental changes affect microbial communities and ecosystem functions
- Evaluate applications of microbes across different environments and contexts
- Analyse ethical considerations and commercialisation issues related to microbiology and biotechnology
- Recognise major pathogens and understand their virulence mechanisms
- Master core microbiological and biotechnological research methods, including interpretation and evaluation of scientific results
- Develop skills to plan and lead activities in microbiology and biotechnology
- Communicate scientific knowledge effectively in an international context
Career opportunities
Graduates can continue to doctoral studies or enter the workforce in fields such as research and development, healthcare and environmental monitoring, food safety, administration and consultancy, business and management, or education and teaching.
