Masters in Genetics and Molecular Biosciences
Entry requirements
You are eligible to apply if you:
- have completed a first-cycle (bachelor's or equivalent) degree, or will do so by the given deadline.
- meet the degree language requirements. Find out more about proving your English language proficiency.
- have completed a sufficient amount of applicable studies. See the admission criteria at Studyinfo.fi for more details.
Suitable background studies must include studies in the discipline of genetics and molecular biosciences. The applicability and sufficient scope of studies are assessed after applying. No preliminary assessments of the applicability of studies are made.

Course content
The Master’s Programme in Genetics and Molecular Biosciences (GMB) equips you with advanced knowledge and skills in modern biosciences, ranging from genes and molecules to cells, tissues, and whole organisms. You can tailor your studies to your interests by choosing one of four study tracks: Biochemistry and Structural Biology, Cell and Developmental Biology, Genetics and Genomics, or Molecular and Physiological Basis of Health.
What is Genetics and Molecular Biosciences (GMB)?
How do genes control the development and functioning of cells, tissues, and organisms? How do molecules and cells interact and communicate, and how are these processes studied? How do plants and animals respond to environmental changes?
These fundamental questions are central to understanding molecular and cellular mechanisms, the disruption of which can lead to disease development and progression.
Researchers in genetics, genomics, cell and developmental biology, biochemistry, structural biology, molecular plant science, and physiology are working to answer these questions.
The GMB programme is grounded in basic scientific research and closely integrated with experimental work conducted at the University of Helsinki.
Why study Genetics and Molecular Biosciences?
The programme provides comprehensive training in modern biosciences, from molecular and genetic mechanisms to cellular and organismal function.
Upon completing the programme, you will:
- Gain in-depth knowledge of genetics, biochemistry, and molecular biosciences, along with the experimental methods used in these fields
- Understand how genes and biomolecules function across cellular, tissue, and organism levels
- Develop the ability to critically evaluate scientific information and communicate it to diverse audiences
- Learn to generate new scientific knowledge about genes, biomolecules, and cells through experimental research
- Effectively use existing research data and biological databases
- Apply good scientific practice in your work
- Strengthen independent project management and problem-solving skills
- Work effectively in multidisciplinary and multicultural environments
The Master of Science (MSc) degree prepares you for careers in both basic and applied research, as well as expert roles in public administration and biotechnology industries. It also qualifies you for doctoral-level studies.
Career support and opportunities
Graduates benefit from a strong academic foundation combined with practical research experience, which supports successful career development across scientific fields.
Language of instruction
Teaching and study materials in compulsory and most optional courses are in English. You may complete exams, assignments, and your Master’s thesis in English. Finnish or Swedish may also be used if you are proficient in either language.
