Master’s Programme in Materials Research
Study one of the most diverse and multidisciplinary fields in natural sciences at the University of Helsinki.
Can materials research help solve global challenges?
All modern technology is built on materials. Materials research plays a key role in addressing major societal challenges and enabling new discoveries in areas such as energy, food, water, safety, health and wellbeing, the environment, sustainable resource use, and urbanisation. By designing new materials with tailored and often unexpected properties, scientists can transform the way we live our everyday lives.
Materials research is among the most interdisciplinary fields in natural sciences. The Master’s Programme in Materials Research (MATRES) integrates physics, chemistry, biology, medical sciences, mathematics, and computer science into a coherent and comprehensive study framework.
You will explore topics such as biomaterials, nanomaterials, smart materials, polymers, composites, electronics, energy generation and storage, as well as green and sustainable materials.
Study lines
The programme offers seven study lines, each representing a key area of materials research:
- Experimental Materials Physics
- Computational Materials Physics
- Medical Physics
- Polymer Materials Chemistry
- Inorganic Materials Chemistry
- Electronics and Industrial Applications
- Sustainable Materials
