Course content
The MSc Criminology is a one-year full-time postgraduate degree designed to critically examine crime, criminalisation, justice and social harm in contemporary local and global contexts. The programme explores how power, inequality, violence and state institutions shape experiences of crime and justice, encouraging you to engage with criminology from a bottom-up, decolonial and globally informed perspective.
You will develop advanced theoretical understanding alongside applied research and policy skills. Core themes include crime control, punishment, victimisation, social harm, inequality and justice, supported by training in research methods and critical analysis. The programme culminates in an independent research project, allowing you to investigate a contemporary criminological issue in depth.
Teaching integrates theory with real-world application through case studies, policy analysis and collaborative learning. You will graduate with a portfolio of written, oral and digital work that demonstrates your analytical, ethical and policy-focused capabilities.
The MSc prepares you for careers across the criminal justice sector, NGOs, policy development, advocacy, research and related fields, as well as progression to doctoral study.
