Successful applicants will usually hold an undergraduate honours degree awarded by a UK university, or an equivalent higher education qualification. Applicants would normally require a 2:2 or above. We would prefer degrees that are 100% Psychology but will consider joint honours degrees i.e. Psychology with law, but degree would have to contain at least 50% Psychology. For exceptional candidates, particularly those with substantial relevant work experience in schools or relevant occupations, we will consider applications from those who hold a 3rd class degree. English Language and Mathematics, Grades C or above, required at point of application. Prior to applying to Manchester Met, it is valuable to draw upon your experience in different learning contexts. This can be evidenced in several ways, such as time spent in schools or colleges, relevant practical experience in industry, voluntary organisations and other settings. You should clearly reference this experience in your application and comment on the insights you have gained into the professional teaching role. All PGCE applicants will need to pass pre-entry Professional Skills Tests in Numeracy and Literacy. We recommend you check the Department of Education website for the latest updates. You will need to have at least 2 weeks experience in a UK School/College undertaken in the two years prior to admission. An ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written English. Excellent inter-personal skills. An informed and realistic understanding of the complexities and challenge of teaching in a Secondary school. An understanding of how learning develops within an engaging rich and broad context, with recognition of the contribution made by parents and carers. Personal qualities and abilities appropriate to becoming an effective teacher, including a strong motivation to teach young students, an ability to express personal views with clarity and conviction, to listen and respond appropriately to the views of others, awareness of, and commitment to, issues relating to Equal Opportunities and providing all students with an inclusive learning environment. Intellectual capacity to critically reflect upon experience and personal challenges. A Disclosure and Barring Service Check and DfE Fitness to Teach test are also required.

The Faculty of Education has a longstanding national reputation for providing high-calibre initial teacher training with over 20 Secondary specialisms available. We have a well established partnership with over 800 secondary schools and colleges across the North West region and beyond.
Our PGCE Psychology is aimed at trainees wishing to teach one or more of the social sciences (sociology, psychology and politics) in secondary schools and/or post-16 colleges.
It is amongst the first in the country designed to offer specific training to teach in the 14-19 sector and offers a trainee teacher exchange and links to schools in Europe and the USA. You will have the opportunity to learn about the common core areas taught in UK Psychology departments.
A special feature is that sessions are delivered by experienced team leaders for Psychology GCE. There will also be the opportunity to have sessions with some of the top practitioners and authors in the world of Psychology.
This course is available via University led and School Direct routes.
We also offer an Assessment-Only route to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) aimed at experienced, but unqualified graduate teachers, wishing to complete a formal qualification.
