You will normally have a minimum of a 2:2 undergraduate honours degree awarded by a UK university, or an equivalent higher education qualification. Your degree needs to support the subject knowledge requirements of the National Curriculum for Chemistry. For exceptional candidates, particularly those with substantial relevant work experience in schools or relevant occupations, we will consider applications from those who hold a 3rd class degree.
You will also need GCSEs at grade C/4 or above in English Language and Mathematics. However, applicants are able to apply with GCSEs pending for this course as we can offer MMU GCSE Equivalency tests.
We do not accept the following qualifications as equivalent to GCSE: Adult numeracy and literacy, Functional Skills or Key Skills
Experience in educational settings
Successful candidates will demonstrate a good understanding of teaching and learning within a secondary school setting.
Candidates may wish to evidence their understanding by drawing on related examples or experiences, such as time spent in schools or other learning settings.
Candidates will demonstrate knowledge of Chemistry in the science curriculum. As a science teacher you will also have some capability in biology and physics.
Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course
We usually offer a Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course during the summer prior to the PGCE course. This allows applicants who may have worked in industry for some time, or who have not covered all aspects of required subject knowledge as part of their degree, to ensure they are up to date with all subject requirements. A Disclosure and Barring Service check and a DfE Fitness to Teach test are also required.
Months of entry
TOur one-year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) prepares you to teach the secondary school science curriculum.
You will learn how to teach all three sciences to GCSE and your specialism, Biology, Chemistry or Physics, up to A level.
You’ll explore various teaching methods in our laboratories, which mirror school science classrooms. You’ll consider how to plan lessons and manage activities. You'll learn how to reflect on your developing practice and how research can develop this.
Some of the topics you’ll explore include behaviour management, mental health and emotional wellbeing, teacher persona, and non-verbal communication (such as body language).
And, you’ll conduct some of the experiments you might use on your placements such as exploring the properties of electromagnets, extracting DNA from a kiwi fruit, and investigating the reactions of alkaline metals.
You’ll also have guest sessions with alumni and experts from a variety of organisations. Past sessions include speakers from the National Space Centre, Royal Society of Chemistry, and Science and Plants for Schools (SAPS).
You won’t simply learn teaching methods with us on campus though, you’ll spend at least 120 days on placements in a variety of schools.

We also offer an Assessment-Only route to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) aimed at experienced, but unqualified graduate teachers, wishing to complete a formal qualification.
