Course content

The MA in Linguistics and English Language Teaching is designed for both language teachers and graduates intending to become language teachers. It provides a deep understanding of language and language development in order to develop expertise for language teaching. Students develop a strong theoretical understanding of what language is and how languages are structured and acquired, and consider how this understanding might inform language teaching methodology.

The programme includes core modules in linguistics (in particular language acquisition, syntax and phonetics), as well as language teaching (focusing on language teaching methodologies and their application).

Module titles include:
• approaches to linguistics and language acquisition
• foundations of syntax
• second language acquisition
• methodology in language teaching
• language teaching in practice

The programme also covers research methods in linguistics. Students are trained to carry out original research and complete a dissertation under the guidance of a personal supervisor
